FlowFi vs Hnry: which is right for Australian sole traders?
Hnry and FlowFi both exist to take the tax admin off sole traders, but they go about it in very different ways. Hnry is a managed service: your clients pay into a Hnry account, Hnry sets aside your tax, pays you what is left, and lodges your BAS and tax return as your registered tax agent. It is closer to hiring an accountant and a bookkeeper in one, priced as a percentage of what you earn.
FlowFi is software. You upload your bank statements, the AI categorises every transaction, flags GST and deductions, and builds your quarterly BAS. You lodge it yourself or hand the pack to your accountant, and your money never leaves your own bank account. It costs a flat $29 a month on Pro. Neither option is wrong; the right one depends on how much you earn and how much you want to hand off.

What you'd pay
Hnry charges 1% of income paid through its account, capped at $1,500 a year (both figures before GST). FlowFi Pro is $29 a month ($348 a year), or $290 if you pay yearly. The table uses the monthly figure. Here is how that plays out at four common income levels.
| Annual income | Hnry per year | FlowFi Pro per year | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $400 + GST | $348 | $52 less with FlowFi |
| $75,000 | $750 + GST | $348 | $402 less with FlowFi |
| $100,000 | $1,000 + GST | $348 | $652 less with FlowFi |
| $150,000 | $1,500 + GST | $348 | $1,152 less with FlowFi |
Hnry's fee only applies to income paid through Hnry. If you want the tax lodged for you, that saving buys a good chunk of an accountant's time; see the section on keeping your accountant below.
Choose Hnry if
- You want someone else to lodge your BAS and tax return, and you would rather not think about it at all.
- You like having tax and super set aside automatically from every payment before it reaches you.
- You earn under roughly $35,000 a year, where the 1% fee works out close to the cost of software anyway.
Choose FlowFi if
- You want your clients to pay you directly, keep full control of your own bank account, and still see what to set aside for tax each week.
- You earn more than about $35,000 a year and would rather pay a flat $29 a month than a percentage of income.
- You already have an accountant you trust, or you are comfortable lodging a pre-filled BAS yourself.
Can I use FlowFi and still have an accountant?
Yes, and for most sole traders that is the sweet spot. FlowFi does the bookkeeping: categorising transactions, working out GST, flagging deductions and building the BAS figures. When you need them, you export a tax pack in PDF, CSV, MYOB or Xero format with one click and send it across.
Your accountant then spends their time on the part that is worth paying for, which is advice, structure and lodgement, instead of billing you to sort through a year of bank statements. Clean books in usually means a smaller bill out.
