Alternative

Looking for a Hnry alternative? FlowFi is the flat-fee, keep-your-money option

Hnry is a good service for people who want to hand the whole thing over: your clients pay a Hnry account, Hnry takes out tax and its fee, pays you the rest, and lodges your BAS and tax return. The cost is a percentage of what you earn and a bank account that is not yours.

FlowFi is software for the sole trader who wants the admin done but wants to keep the money and pay a flat price. You upload your bank statement, AI categorises it, flags GST and deductions, builds the BAS and tells you what to set aside each week. Pro is $29 a month. This page is fair about what you give up as well as what you keep; the full side-by-side is at FlowFi vs Hnry.

Why people look for a Hnry alternative

The fee grows with income

1% + GST of everything paid through Hnry, up to $1,500 + GST a year. On $70,000 that is $770 including GST, more than double a flat software fee, for work that AI now does in minutes.

Income is routed through their account

Clients pay Hnry, not you. That is the mechanism that lets Hnry deduct tax automatically, and it is also the reason some sole traders leave: they want their money in their own bank, on their own terms.

They already have an accountant

If you trust your accountant for advice and lodgement, paying a second provider a percentage of income to do the same job does not add up. What you need is clean books to hand over.

What you keep

  • A running answer to "how much should I set aside for tax": Tax Pot works it out from your real transactions and shows what to move each week, with an optional super percentage.
  • Invoicing with PDF, email and pay links (bank transfer or PayID), quotes your client accepts online, recurring invoices, and automatic chasing at 1, 7 and 14 days overdue if you switch it on.
  • GST flagged on every transaction and every BAS label prepared for you, plus receipts, mileage and a cash-flow forecast.
  • Your own bank account, your own client relationships, and a flat fee that does not rise when you have a good year.

What you give up

  • Lodgement. FlowFi does not lodge your BAS or tax return. You copy the prepared labels into ATO Online (about five minutes) or send the pack to your accountant.
  • Human accountants on call. FlowFi is software with email support; advice comes from your own accountant.
  • Automatic tax deductions from each payment. FlowFi tells you the amount; moving it is up to you.
  • A bank feed. There is no bank connection; you export a CSV or PDF statement and upload it, which takes a minute or two per account per month.

Switching in 15 minutes

You do not have to migrate anything. Your bank already has your records; FlowFi reads them.

  1. 1

    Export a bank statement

Download a CSV or PDF of the quarter from your own bank. If income has been landing in Hnry, export the Hnry transaction history too so nothing is missed.

  2. 2

    Upload it to FlowFi

Drop the file in. AI categorises every transaction, works out the GST and flags likely deductions in a couple of minutes.

  3. 3

    Review the uncertain ones

FlowFi shows a confidence score on each line and only asks about the ones it is unsure of. Tax Pot then tells you what to set aside each week.

  4. 4

Point invoices at your own account

Set up your invoice template with your bank details or PayID, send the next invoice from FlowFi, and tell regular clients to pay you directly from now on.

Frequently asked questions

Does FlowFi lodge my BAS and tax return like Hnry does?

No. FlowFi prepares every BAS label from your categorised transactions and walks you through copying them into ATO Online, which takes about five minutes a quarter. For the annual return you export a tax pack in PDF, CSV, Xero or MYOB format and either lodge yourself or hand it to a registered tax agent.

Can I keep my own accountant?

Yes, and it is the setup most FlowFi users run. FlowFi does the bookkeeping, your accountant does the advice and the lodgement, and because the data arrives categorised and BAS-ready their bill is usually smaller than it would be from a shoebox of statements.

What happens to the money and history in my Hnry account when I leave?

Hnry has its own process for closing an account and paying out any balance; check its help pages for the current steps. Before you close, download your transaction history and any invoices and lodgement records so you have five years of records, then upload the history to FlowFi if you want it in one place.

Is FlowFi cheaper than Hnry at my income?

Hnry charges 1% + GST of the income paid through it, capped at $1,500 + GST a year. FlowFi Pro is $348 a year on the monthly plan or $290 paid yearly. Above roughly $35,000 of income the flat fee is lower, and the gap widens as you earn more. Below that the two are close, and Hnry includes lodgement, so the decision is about control and cost together rather than price alone.
