The best accounting software for sole traders in Australia, compared honestly
Nine ways to keep the books as a one-person business, from a free spreadsheet to a bookkeeper on retainer, judged on the five things that decide whether your BAS gets done on time: what it costs, how your transactions get in, whether the BAS is prepared for you, whether anything tells you what to set aside for tax, and who actually lodges.
FlowFi makes one of the nine, so read the FlowFi row with that in mind. Every column applies the same test to us as to everyone else, and each option links to a longer side-by-side comparison with the cases where you should choose it over us.

Prices checked September 2026 on each provider's Australian pricing page and rounded; see their sites for current plans. “Partly” means the figures are available but you assemble or interpret them yourself, or the feature depends on the plan. “Own account” means your income runs through the provider's transaction account rather than a feed from your bank.
Each option in a paragraph
FlowFi
$29 a month or $290 a year. 14 days free, no card.Upload a CSV or PDF bank statement and the AI categorises every line with a confidence score, works out the GST, flags deductions and fills in every BAS label on a copy-ready card. Tax Pot shows what to set aside from real transactions. Invoicing with pay links, quotes, recurring invoices and automatic reminders is included. There is no bank feed and it does not lodge for you: you copy the labels into ATO Online or send the pack to your accountant.
Best for: Sole traders who want the BAS done from a bank statement in minutes, for a flat fee, without handing their income to anyone.
See the featuresHnry
1% of income paid through Hnry, plus GST, capped at $1,500 plus GST a year.Hnry is a registered tax agent, not just software. Clients pay you through Hnry, it withholds tax and GST as money arrives, and it lodges your BAS and income tax return. The trade-off is the fee, which scales with income until the cap, and the fact that your income is routed through their account first. At lower incomes the percentage can work out close to the cost of software anyway.
Best for: Sole traders who want tax handled entirely for them and are happy to have their income paid into Hnry’s account for a percentage fee.
FlowFi vs HnryXero
Ignite/Starter around $35 a month, Standard around $70. Add-ons such as Expenses cost extra. The default for Australian small business, and the one most accountants know best. Bank feeds, invoicing and an activity statement report are all there, and Xero can submit the activity statement to the ATO once connected. For a one-person business the entry plan carries volume caps, categorisation is rules you set up rather than AI, and there is no built-in answer to “what should I set aside for tax?”.
Best for: Businesses with employees, suppliers and an accountant or bookkeeper who works in the file with you.
FlowFi vs XeroMYOB Solo
Around $10 to $15 a month. MYOB Business plans cost more.MYOB’s sole-trader product sits at the low end on price and brings bank feeds and an optional MYOB transaction account. Activity statement figures come from the transactions you code. Check the current Solo feature list for what is automated, because the wider MYOB range is built for accountants and bookkeepers first.
Best for: Sole traders who want the cheapest brand-name option with bank feeds and are happy to code transactions themselves.
FlowFi vs MYOBQuickBooks
Simple Start around $29 a month. Essentials and Plus cost more.Intuit’s small-business product with an Australian edition that supports GST. Bank feeds, invoicing, receipt capture and mileage tracking are all in the app. GST reports and BAS figures are available, though there is no Australia-specific guide to copying them into ATO Online, and categorisation is rules and suggestions on feed transactions rather than AI over an uploaded statement.
Best for: Small businesses that want a global product with an Australian GST edition, receipt capture and mileage in the mobile app.
FlowFi vs QuickBooksRounded
Around $19.95 to $29.95 a month depending on plan.Built in Australia for freelancers and sole traders, invoicing first. Quotes, recurring invoices and reminders are its core strength, with bank feeds and expense capture behind them. BAS figures are reported from invoices and expenses. Check the current feature list for deduction flagging and tax set-aside.
Best for: Freelancers whose main job is invoicing: quotes, recurring invoices and reminders, with bookkeeping behind it.
FlowFi vs RoundedThriday
In transition after the January 2026 Tyro acquisition. Check the current site.Thriday bundles a business transaction account with automated bookkeeping and BAS, and historically offered lodgement through the platform. It was acquired by Tyro in January 2026 and the product is in transition, so check what is available today before you choose it.
Best for: Sole traders who want a transaction account, bookkeeping and tax in one app and are comfortable running their banking through it.
FlowFi vs ThridayA spreadsheet
Free with Google Sheets, or included with Microsoft 365.Free, flexible and entirely on you. Every transaction is categorised by hand, GST is a formula you maintain, nothing flags a deduction you missed, and the BAS is totals you build and map to the labels yourself. It works, right up until the quarter you fall behind.
Best for: Very low volumes, a lot of patience, and someone who enjoys maintaining formulas.
FlowFi vs a spreadsheetA bookkeeper
Typically $300 to $700 a quarter for a sole trader, depending on volume and what is included.A person categorises your transactions, usually in Xero or MYOB, prepares and reviews the BAS, and lodges it if they are a registered BAS agent. You get judgement and someone to ask. You also wait a week or two each quarter, and the cost over a year is many times a software subscription.
Best for: Anyone who wants a human to keep the books, answer questions and, if they are a registered BAS agent, lodge.
FlowFi vs a bookkeeperThe short version, by situation
You want it done for you and do not mind the fee
Hnry, or a bookkeeper who is a registered BAS agent. Both lodge. Hnry costs a percentage of income; a bookkeeper costs a fixed fee per quarter.
You want to do your own BAS in minutes, for a flat fee
FlowFi. Upload the statement, review the uncertain lines, copy the labels into ATO Online. Tax Pot keeps the set-aside honest between quarters.
You have employees, or an accountant who lives in your file
Xero. It is what most accountants work in, and the extra cost buys payroll and multi-user access you will use.
Invoicing is most of your bookkeeping
Rounded, or FlowFi if you also want the BAS prepared from your bank statement. Both send quotes, recurring invoices and reminders.
You want the cheapest brand-name option with a bank feed
MYOB Solo. Expect to code transactions yourself and check what the Solo plan automates before relying on it for BAS.
You earn under about $35,000
Hnry’s percentage fee is close to the cost of software at this income, and it lodges for you. If you expect to grow, pick the flat-fee option you will still be using at $90,000.
Questions people ask
What is the cheapest accounting software for a sole trader in Australia?
A spreadsheet is free. Among purpose-built products, MYOB Solo is around $10 to $15 a month, Rounded from around $19.95, FlowFi and QuickBooks Simple Start around $29, and Xero from around $35 (all as checked September 2026). Hnry charges a percentage of income rather than a subscription, so its cost depends on what you earn.
Do I need bank feeds?
Not necessarily. A bank feed saves you downloading a statement, but it also means giving a third party ongoing access to your bank. FlowFi works from the CSV or PDF statement you download from your bank, which every Australian bank provides, so your bank login is never shared. If you have hundreds of transactions a week, a feed is worth it; most sole traders do not.
Which options lodge the BAS for me?
Hnry lodges for you because it is a registered tax agent, and a bookkeeper who is a registered BAS agent can lodge on your behalf. Xero can submit the activity statement to the ATO once connected. FlowFi, MYOB Solo, QuickBooks and Rounded prepare the figures; you lodge through ATO Online, which takes a few minutes once the labels are filled in.
Can accounting software tell me how much tax to set aside?
Hnry withholds it automatically because your income passes through its account. FlowFi’s Tax Pot works it out from your real transactions and shows the gap and a weekly amount to close it, while the money stays in your own bank account. The general-purpose products leave this to you or your accountant.
Does FlowFi replace my accountant?
No. FlowFi does the sorting: categorising, GST, deductions and the BAS labels. Keep your accountant for advice and for your income tax return. The accountant export gives them a clean pack instead of a shoebox, which usually makes their bill smaller, not larger.
What if I am not registered for GST yet?
You still need records, and you still want to know what to set aside for income tax. Any of these options works below the $75,000 threshold; the BAS features simply sit unused until you register. FlowFi’s guide on whether you need to register for GST covers the threshold and the timing.
