How much tax will I pay as a sole trader?
Pick the income closest to yours. Each page shows the income tax, the Medicare levy, the effective rate, your take-home and the amount to set aside each week, worked from the 2025-26 resident rates, with the brackets shown so you can see how the number is built.

Tax on every income level
The 2025-26 resident tax brackets
| Taxable income | Tax on this income |
|---|---|
| $0 to $18,200 | Nil |
| $18,201 to $45,000 | 16c for each $1 over $18,200 |
| $45,001 to $135,000 | $4,288 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000 |
| $135,001 to $190,000 | $31,288 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000 |
| $190,001 and over | $51,638 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000 |
Plus the Medicare levy at 2% of taxable income. The pages ignore the low-income Medicare reduction and tax offsets, so at lower incomes the real bill can be a little smaller. The 16% rate is legislated to change from 1 July 2026; confirm current rates on the ATO site.
Why the number matters more when you are self-employed
An employee never sees their tax because the employer withholds it each pay. A sole trader receives every dollar and owes the tax later, in one bill after the first year and then in quarterly PAYG instalments. The only reliable fix is to set aside a share of every payment as it lands.
What FlowFi does with it
Tax Pot works out the set-aside from your real transactions as the year goes on, shows the gap between what you have put away and what you will owe, and tells you what to move each week. GST is tracked separately and every BAS label is prepared for you to copy into ATO Online.
Stop guessing what to set aside
Upload a bank statement and FlowFi categorises every transaction, flags GST, builds your BAS and keeps a Tax Pot running. Pro is $29 a month or $290 a year, with a 14-day free trial and no card needed.
