A tax invoice must say "Tax invoice", show your identity and ABN, the date, a description of what was sold, the GST amount and the total. For sales of $1,000 or more it also needs the buyer's identity or ABN. This tool lays those out for you; it is general information, not tax advice.

Want this saved, numbered automatically, sent by email and chased when overdue?

FlowFi keeps your clients and invoice numbers, emails the invoice with a pay-online link, marks it viewed when the client opens it, and sends polite reminders at 1, 7 and 14 days overdue. It also reads your bank statement and builds your BAS. Pro is $29 a month, the first 14 days are free, and there is no card to enter.

How it works

  • Tax invoice or invoice: if you are registered for GST, or any line carries GST, the document is titled "Tax invoice" as the ATO requires. Otherwise it says "Invoice" and no GST is added.
  • GST per line: prices are entered ex GST. Lines with GST switched on add 10%; GST-free lines add nothing. The subtotal, GST and total are worked out to the cent, and a discount is applied before GST.
  • What the ATO expects on a tax invoice: the words "Tax invoice", your identity and ABN, the date, a description of each item with quantity and price, the GST amount, and for sales of $1,000 or more the buyer's identity or ABN. This layout covers each of those.
  • The PDF is generated on your device. Your logo and bank details never leave your browser, which is also why the form can remember them without an account.
