BAS and bookkeeping for tutors and coaches, without the Sunday-night spreadsheet
A tutor’s statement is dozens of small transfers from parents with a child’s first name in the description, a term paid up front here and there, a payout from a tutoring or course platform minus its fee, and maybe a school or club paying on invoice. Costs are textbooks and printing, a whiteboard and a decent webcam, a video-call subscription, a working with children check, and the drive to students’ homes.
FlowFi reads the statement, matches payments to students, sorts materials and subscriptions, flags the deductions, and builds the quarterly BAS. Review it, copy the labels into ATO Online, and get back to the lesson plan.

What FlowFi does for tutors and coaches
Matches many small payments to students
Parent transfers and platform payouts are recognised as income, with platform fees captured as expenses.
Sorts materials, subscriptions and checks
Textbooks, printing, video-call tools and registration fees are categorised and flagged as deductions.
Term invoices with reminders
Invoice a term of lessons up front and let reminders follow up the parents who forget.
Tracks travel to students
Log the drive between students’ homes and FlowFi applies the current ATO cents-per-kilometre rate where it applies.
Builds the BAS from your statement
Upload the quarter, review the pre-filled figures and copy them into ATO Online.
How it works
Upload your bank statement
Export a CSV or PDF from your bank (CBA, Westpac, NAB, ANZ, Macquarie and most others) and drop it into FlowFi. No bank login, ever.
AI sorts every transaction
Income, expenses, equipment and transfers are categorised, GST is worked out on each line and likely deductions are flagged for you to confirm.
Review and lodge your BAS
Check the pre-filled labels, copy them into ATO Online in about five minutes, or export the pack for your accountant. FlowFi does not lodge for you.

Questions tutors and coaches ask
Is tutoring GST-free like school education?
Usually not. Private tutoring is generally taxable if you are registered for GST, unless it meets the specific conditions for an education course under the GST law. Most sole-trader tutors are under the $75,000 threshold anyway. Check with your accountant if you are near the threshold.
A parent paid for the whole term in advance. When is it income?
On a cash basis the payment is income in the quarter you received it. FlowFi records it on the date it landed in your account.
Can I claim the drive to a student’s house?
Travel between students during the day is generally deductible. Travel from home to your first regular student or venue is usually private, unless your home is a genuine place of business for the tutoring. Log the trips that qualify in FlowFi.
I teach online from my spare room. What can I claim?
A share of your home running costs based on the hours you work from home, using either the ATO’s fixed rate method or the actual cost method. See our home office guide for the records you need.
