For yoga teachers, pilates instructors and movement teachers working on an ABN

BAS and bookkeeping for yoga and pilates instructors, without the Sunday-night spreadsheet

A movement teacher’s income often comes from several places: a studio that pays per class, private clients, workshops, online sessions and the occasional retreat. The expenses are smaller but add up, from room hire and insurance to training, music licensing and booking software. The usual problems are not knowing whether you are a contractor or an employee at each studio, mixing income from several sources, and missing deductible training.

FlowFi reads the statement you already have, sorts each income source, categorises studio hire and training, works out the GST, and builds the quarter’s BAS. You check it, copy the labels into ATO Online, and get back to teaching.

What FlowFi does for yoga and pilates instructors

Separates income by source

Studio payments, private clients, workshop income and online class payments are sorted so you can see what each brings in. Payments from platforms are matched to the statement.

Tracks studio and room hire

Hire fees for classes you run are picked up as recurring expenses. If the venue is registered for GST, the credit is worked out from the invoice.

Captures training and memberships

Teacher training, continuing professional development and association memberships are categorised as self-education or professional fees, with a prompt to check that each relates to your current work.

Handles class packs and prepaid passes

Money received for a pack of classes is income. FlowFi shows the payments it sees and helps you report them in the right BAS period.

Builds your BAS from the bank statement

Upload the quarter, review the pre-filled G1, 1A and 1B, and copy the labels into ATO Online. FlowFi also shows how close your turnover is to the registration threshold.

How it works

Step 01

Upload your bank statement

Export a CSV or PDF from your bank (CBA, Westpac, NAB, ANZ, Macquarie and most others) and drop it into FlowFi. No bank login, ever.

Step 02

AI sorts every transaction

Income, expenses, equipment and transfers are categorised, GST is worked out on each line and likely deductions are flagged for you to confirm.

Step 03

Review and lodge your BAS

Check the pre-filled labels, copy them into ATO Online in about five minutes, or export the pack for your accountant. FlowFi does not lodge for you.

Questions yoga and pilates instructors ask

Am I a contractor or an employee at a studio?

The ATO looks at the real working relationship, including control over how you teach, who provides equipment and whether you can send someone else. Many studios engage teachers as contractors, but the label alone does not decide it. See our guide on contractor or employee.

Is my yoga clothing deductible?

Usually not. Everyday activewear is conventional clothing, even if you only wear it to teach. Branded uniforms with a logo can qualify. See our guide on uniforms and protective clothing.

Do I have to charge GST on classes?

If you are registered for GST, or required to be, your classes are generally taxable supplies. You must register once your turnover reaches the threshold. Check the ATO for the current rules.

Can I deduct a retreat I run overseas?

Costs directly connected to running the retreat for paying guests can be deductible, but GST and tax treatment can be complex. Keep detailed records and ask a registered tax agent before you plan one.
