Hairdresser and beauty invoice template for salon, mobile and bridal work

Most salon and mobile work is paid on the day, so the invoice doubles as the receipt: services as separate lines, retail products with GST, and a tip or discount if there was one. Bridal and event bookings are different: a deposit invoice secures the date and a balance invoice goes out a week before, listing each person and the on-location travel.

Chair renters invoice the salon or the salon invoices them, depending on the arrangement, and that needs its own clean paper trail. Put your cancellation policy in the terms so a no-show can be charged.

What must be on a tax invoice

The ATO's list. The template lays each one out for you; it is general information, not tax advice.

  • The words "Tax invoice" (an invoice without GST can just say "Invoice")
  • Your identity: your business or trading name
  • Your ABN
  • The date the invoice was issued
  • A description of what was sold, with the quantity and the price of each item
  • The GST amount, shown separately or as "Total includes GST of $X"
  • Which items carry GST if some do and some do not
  • For sales of $1,000 or more, the buyer's identity or ABN as well

Worth adding for your trade

  • The event date, venue and arrival time for bridal and mobile bookings
  • Each person and service listed for group bookings
  • Retail products on their own lines, since they carry GST like the services

Questions about invoicing

Do I charge GST on hair and beauty services?

Once you are registered for GST, yes, on services and on retail products. Under the $75,000 threshold you are not registered and cannot charge it. Many mobile stylists and beauty therapists sit under the line in their first years.

How do I invoice a bridal party?

Invoice the person who booked (usually the bride) for the whole party: one line per service with the number of people as the quantity. Take a deposit at booking and invoice the balance a week before the wedding. Both invoices are tax invoices if you are registered.

I rent a chair. Who invoices whom?

Under most chair rental arrangements you invoice your own clients and pay the salon rent, which the salon invoices you for. If the salon takes a commission from your takings instead, agree in writing how the split is recorded so both sets of books match.
